Spark Energy amongst fastest-growing young European businesses says Silicon Valley

Spark Energy has been identified amongst 60 fast-growing young European businesses with the potential to ramp up their £100m+ turnover during the next three to five years.
The accolade for the Scottish Borders-based energy provider comes from Silicon Valley Comes to the UK (SVC2UK), which annually chooses companies to join its Scale Up Club.
The initiative seeks to support “promising” companies to “scale up effectively” by offering a year-round programme of mentoring sessions, networking events and workshops.
Facebook and Google are amongst those involved, as well as other Silicon Valley companies such as Rapportive, Edmodo, August Capital and Blinkx.
Spark CEO Chris Gauld was invited to and attended a CEO Summit at the London Stock Exchange which saw leading firms, including Facebook and Google, offer support to entrepreneurs to address “current barriers to scale”.
He said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to engage with and learn from some of the world’s most-exciting companies. The fact that Spark was identified as fitting into this exclusive club is a massive confidence boost and recognition of what we have achieved in the last year by offering better prices, better service and a relentless focus on improving customer experience.”
Spark, which is the only UK energy company specialising in the lettings market, now employs over 200 people in its Selkirk headquarters and recently passed the 100,000 mark in customers. The company moved into profit for the first time this year, and forecasts substantial growth in the next few years.
The CEO Summit came on the back of the SVC2UK Scale Up Report which analysed what could happen if the “UK managed to close the scale-up gap”.
SVC2UK was founded eight years ago by Ellen Levy (Investor, Advisor and tech company exec) and co-Chairmen Reid Hoffman (Founder of Linkedin) and Sherry Coutu CBE (serial entrepreneur and angel investor) to support the ecosystem for entrepreneurs in the UK.
It brings leading Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, investors and thought leaders to the UK to explore ideas and to ignite local entrepreneurship.
Amongst its aims are to:
- Help the most promising first time CEOs in Europe to scale their companies better
- Inspire students to consider entrepreneurship as a career
- Foster relationships between leading entrepreneurs, business people and investors
SVC2UK founder Sherry Couto, said: “There has never been a better time to support the scale up of UK companies such as Spark. SVC2UK provides a unique blend of mentoring, inspiration and high-quality networking to help CEOs scale up fast.
“We are grateful to the London Stock Exchange for hosting our scale up event and providing the environment to foster ambitious goals. We are excited about the impact this summit will have on the companies involved and on the UK economy as a whole.”
